Business banking for Irish companies

Company Bank Account in Ireland open one for your new company

A company is its own legal person, so it needs its own bank account. Opening one can feel slow, because banks must run strict identity and anti-money-laundering checks. We help you prepare a complete, accurate application and point you to a provider that fits, so you spend less time chasing.

COMPANY NAMEYour Company Limited
Why it matters

Why your company needs its own account

It’s a separate legal person

Company money belongs to the company. Mixing it with your personal account causes trouble with the law and with Revenue.

Cleaner books and tax

Every payment in and out is clearly the company’s, which makes accounts, VAT and your tax return far easier.

You need it to trade

Customers pay into it, and you pay suppliers, VAT, payroll and corporation tax out of it.

Your options

High-street bank or online provider?

Neither is always better. Here’s how they typically differ.

Irish high-street bankOnline bank or e-money provider
Best forCompanies that want a full banking relationship, lending and a local branchStart-ups, online sellers and international payments
Opening processDetailed checks, and often an in-person ID meeting with a directorUsually fully online, though checks are still strict
Deposit protectionDeposits are covered by the Deposit Guarantee Scheme, up to €100,000 per depositor per bankFunds are normally safeguarded rather than covered by the scheme, so check the provider’s terms
Typical speedCan take several weeksOften quicker, but not guaranteed
Many companies use both: a bank account for day-to-day banking and lending, and an online provider for low-cost foreign payments. Approval is always the provider’s decision, not ours.

Avoid the delays

Why applications get stuck

A vague business descriptionNames or addresses that don’t match across documentsComplex ownership with no explanationNo clear link to IrelandMissing source-of-funds detailsApplying before the company is fully set up
Directors living abroad? It’s still possible, but providers look harder at overseas directors, so allow extra time. Read about non-EEA resident directors.
Quick answers

Business bank account questions

Can I open a company account before the company is registered?
In practice, no. Providers need the certificate of incorporation, so start your application as soon as it arrives.
Do I have to meet the bank in person?
Many Irish banks ask for an in-person identity check with at least one director, while some online providers verify everything remotely. We’ll tell you which routes suit your situation.
Can you guarantee my application will be approved?
No one can. Each provider makes its own decision. What we can do is make your application complete and consistent, which removes the most common reasons for delay or refusal.
Can a non-resident director open an Irish account?
Often, yes, though checks take longer. Having a clear business reason for the Irish company and good documents makes a big difference.
